My Vision

Artist's Statement -

My growth as an artist developed from a desire to make a significant separation between my work as a designer and my need to create art. I set out to create what I imagined to be very “wild” or abstract art, in the hope that it would be devoid of any sense of design. The resulting work, while not exactly abstract, was what I have now come to call “unified chaos”. This is the artistic concept that I now embrace. While I strive for a sense of chaos and abstraction in my work, I also know that my innate sense of organization and unification will always play their part and hopefully strengthen the narrative of my work.

I am particularly drawn to the creation of collage art and mosaic structures, wherein the narrative is often embedded within the smaller pieces of the work, sometimes even obscure. I love the idea of the “sum of all parts” creating the greater story. The balance of color in collage art is also very intriguing to me, and I prefer to allow the color to “happen” as it comes together rather than manage it. While it can seem rather chaotic initially, the natural evolution of such a composition gives it an organic quality that often aids in the narrative of the piece, sometimes even expanding it. While many art forms seem to express only a “moment in time”, I find that a collage often feels much more like a journey.

The subjects I choose for my art tend to be very personal. I often focus on my own experiences, or on those of family and close friends. As a transgender individual, gender and gender variance are important themes for me, and I often address this aspect of my life in my art.
